Canceled due to corona virus. All tickets will be refunded. "Packed with vivid lyrics, steel guitars, and hot licks, Jewell’s Americana-driven brand of country music sounds tailor-made for sweltering, stagnant summer nights." – Entertainment Weekly. Crafting a unique style that mixes poetic ballads with swinging rockers, Eilen Jewell ranks among the best in the Americana genre today. As the reigning Queen of the Minor Key, Jewell leads a tight band that blends country and folk with surf-noir, early blues, rockabilly, and ’60s era rock. Over the course of a decade and a half, Jewell and her band have toured relentlessly, performing for legions of fans from Boise to Melbourne at festivals, theaters, clubs and coffeehouses. Jewel has earned a reputation for matching beautiful songs with fiery performances characterized by warmth, wit and humor. Back in the day, Jewell left her home town of Boise to attend college in Santa Fe, then migrated to Los Angeles and finally, to the East Coast. Jumping into Boston’s roots-music scene, she began hunting for a guitarist. Husband/drummer Jason Beek pointed her to Jerry Miller, a bona-fide Boston legend known for his versatility. They’ve been playing together ever since, including on Jewell’s latest album, Down Hearted Blues, which finds the band unearthing 12 vintage gems written or made famous by an array of artists both renowned and obscure, from Willie Dixon and Memphis Minnie to Charles Sheffield and Betty James. Like expert stonecutters, they chiseled them into exciting new shapes and forms, honoring history while breathing new life into each discovery. Jewell’s first album of original material since 2015, Gypsy, is by turns personal and political, pissed off and blissed out, distilling epic sentiments and persistent doubts into succinct songs. $25 advance, $29 door, GA. 800-838-3006 or BUY ONLINE.

The Senators

3:00 pm
- 5:00 pm
Sandia Bar
4445 Corrales Rd
Corrales, NM
+ Google Map

Phoenix-based folk-rock band The Senators recently left the desert to go to the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York, a long-time cultural hotbed of folk art and musicians including The Band, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell. After sending a homemade demo to one of their idols, producer Simone Felice (Felice Brothers, The Lumineers, The Avett Brothers), The Senators were invited to record the album at Simone’s studio—an old converted barn.

Recently, The Senators released two EP’s from these sessions as the Promised Land and King of America EP, collaborating with Phoenix-based Fortoul Brothers for the album’s art and visuals. These songs are included on several Spotify editorial playlists. The album’s first single, "Wild Wide Open," has been streamed over a million times. The Senators will be on the road for much of 2020 in support of their forthcoming sophomore album. Join us for a free afternoon of indie rock, brought to you by our friends at Occasional Music.

Sorry for the cancelation. All tickets will be refunded through Brown Paper Tickets. In 2011, a handful of artists doing a weekday residency at Austin’s Saxon Pub began “moonlighting” and eventually The South Austin Moonlighters BECAME the steady gig. Nearly a decade, four albums, and hundreds of shows later, the band has refined a unique brand of Americana boasting organic vocal harmonies, top musicianship, and well-crafted songs with a tons of Texas heart. One of our most truly poetic songwriters. – No Depression.

Massachusetts-based Jeffrey Foucault has spent the last decade mining the darker seams of country and blues, producing a string of spare and poetic albums of rare power while garnering accolades internationally for a tersely elegant brand of songwriting set apart by its inherently warm throaty delivery, hauntingly honest and poetic imagery, and weather-beaten cool. In addition to his solo career, Foucault also plays in the sextet Cold Satellite and the trio Redbird, which also includes Kris Delmhorst and Peter Mulvey.

Foucault grew up in a small town in Wisconsin. His father played a plywood guitar and his mother liked to sing. Winter Sundays were for church or ice fishing. He went to college and dropped out, took a job on a fruit farm and started writing songs about a girl from Iowa. He finished school, roofed houses, drove a snowplow, and home-schooled the son of the local bar owner in exchange for beer. He cut his first album in the winter of 2000, and he’s been going strong ever since.

Sofia Talvik

Corrales, NM

The first Swedish female artist to play Lollapalooza, Sofia Talvik’s seven full-length albums of original music are full of sparkle and melancholy. The singer-songwriter grew up in Sweden, but a recent 16-month, 37-state RV tour through the U.S. infused her unmistakably Nordic music with an Americana flavor. The adventure spurred a lot of emotions—triumph and joy, but also self-doubt and defeat—all of which found their way into her songs. Living like a musical nomad, the people she met opened their homes and hearts, and you’ll hear about many of them in her songs when she visits New Mexico on this tour. She has toured the States several times and showcased at SxSW and the Folk Alliance International Conference. RSVP: music@occasionalmusic.net or 505-980-6161. $15 suggested donation. 100% of proceeds go to artist.

Ordinary Elephant

Santa Fe, NM 87501

Winner of the International Folk Music award for 2017 “Artist of the Year,” husband and wife duo Crystal and Pete Damore have been performing together as Ordinary Elephant since 2011. The duo’s sophomore release, Before I Go, produced at Santa Fe’s Kitchen Sink Studio, established them internationally. Their latest album, Honest, is widely lauded as one of the best Americana records of the year.

It was Gillian Welch’s playing that inspired the Ordinary Elephant sound: a well-honed combination of insightful writing, deft harmonies and intertwined clawhammer banjo and guitar. From an early age, Pete has been a guitarist, but when Welch’s “Hard Times” came through his car stereo speakers, the banjo beckoned. Pete’s understated, melodic and mellow banjo weaves through Crystals steady and clean rhythm guitar as poetic lyrics are delivered in rich harmony. Today, they live full-time in a van with their dogs, traveling the country and spreading their musical message.

We recommend purchasing tickets in advance, as last year’s show sold out well in advance. 100% of the evening’s proceeds go to the artists.

For three decades Grammy winner Mollie O’Brien and her husband, guitarist Rich Moore, have made it their mission to find, mine and reinvent other artists’ songs. As songwriters they add their own tunes to the canon of American roots music, boasting a fluid ability to make themselves at home in any genre. Rich, known for his hilarious onstage banter, is a powerhouse guitar player who can keep up with O’Brien’s twists and turns: from blues to traditional folk to jazz to rock & roll.

They met in 1981 at the Denver Folklore Center on April Fool’s Day. Mollie was singing with the vintage swing outfit Prosperity Jazz Band, and Rich was playing bass with The Late Show, a rock-steady blues outfit. Within a year Mollie joined The Late Show, and they began playing Colorado blues festivals and concerts. In the late ’80s, Mollie earned fame when she and her brother Tim released three critically-acclaimed albums for Sugar Hill Records (Take Me Back, Remember Me and Away Out On The Mountain). Eventually, Mollie recorded five equally well-received solo albums and was a regular on Prairie Home Companion. Meanwhile Rich stayed at home with the kids and performed locally while Mollie and Tim toured. Recent years have seen a renewed focus on wife-husband duet recordings and tours. Their latest is the exquisite Daughters (2015).

Higher Ground Bluegrass is New Mexico’s premier Bluegrass band, known for its tight harmonies and tasteful instrumentation. Performing both original material and a variety of traditional and contemporary selections, the band’s philosophy is to find dynamic arrangements for its original material, and to add something new and unique to standard bluegrass tunes to make them their own. With four members providing vocal contributions, the swapping of lead and harmonies offers something new and appealing for each song in their repertoire. HGB has recorded seven albums and won three NM Music Awards for original music. In 2018 the ensemble celebrated its 20th anniversary with the release of its album HGB20. $20 advance, $22 door. GA. Through a combination of storytelling and songs both playful and sincere, Lara draws on her rural New Mexican roots and her urban experiences across the U.S. and abroad as she sings about love, loss, a sense of place, and her own connection to the land. Manzanares won best album honors at last year’s New Mexico Music Awards for her album Land Baby. Presented in collaboration with Occasional Music.
